The Rev. John Downie started the Stornoway Parish Record by listing his own family in 1780, including his marriage and the births of all his children up to Charlotte, with the exception of James whose birthdate is deduced from his death notice in 1833, which gave his age as 66. James may have been older than this because his seniority in the Navy was given as 22 April 1797. Rev. Downie did not record any places of birth or marriage but the birthplace of the children up to Jean was probably Gairloch, where he was minister from 1758 until 1773, and the subsequent children were probably born in Tong, Stornoway - he was minister of Stornoway from 22 July 1773 until 25 September 1788, when he became minister of Urray. |
